E3 2010: June 14th

I decided about an hour ago that I was gonna randomly do some summarized coverage of E3 throughout the week. It's mostly for myself, so I can read back on what went on and what not, not at the same time, maybe you guys could get some use out of it? I mean, it won't be as intense as some other press sites, but hey, I'm bored. Plus, it's a use for my journal.

I'm gonna try to update it every 10-30 minutes, though the updates during the press conference might be slow since it's commercial-free.

If you have any questions, or want me to go a little more in-depth on a couple of things, just ask me.

My coverage for E3 2010 is done for tonight! Expect the Nintendo and Sony Press Conferences tomorrow!

You can catch the Microsoft Press Conference on Spike TV at 1:30 PM EST, and you can catch Day One floor coverage on G4 TV at 3 PM EST.

At 4:30 PM EST, you can catch the Electronic Arts Press Conference, and later on after that, the Ubisoft Press Conference; all on G4 TV.

Microsoft Press Conference

1. Call of Duty: Black Ops - 11/9/2010

The show started with a brand new in-game trailer of Black Ops, showcasing some gameplay and cinematics alike. After the end of the trailer, the head of Treyarch came out onto stage to really show us some gameplay.

Starting off in a damp, rat-infested cave, it quickly shows that the LS button is now to turn on a flashlight. That's new. There's some nice surprises along the way, leading up to a skip of gameplay to save time. Next, we're in a forest in Vietnam, looking at a helipad with a Hind on it. After clearing the area, we board the Hind and are treated to a nice and long, action-packed gameplay sequence full of explosions and badass aerial fights. The graphics kind of suck though.

Don Mattrick then comes out to say that all addons and DLC for all Call of Duty games are now going to be released on Xbox Live first before anywhere else for 2010, 2011, and 2012.

2. Project Natal/Kinect - 11/4/2010

He then goes on to say that Natal now has a name: Kinect.

They then show a picture of Kinect, and proceed to show how easy it is to use it within the 360 Dashboard. And how easy it is to select a movie and rewind/fastforward. Then they show how easy it is to use voice recognition for signing in, selecting things, pausing movies, and selecting music; all without a remote.

There is also a mode called Video Kinect, where you can video chat or normal chat without a headset or webcam. It works between Windows Live Messenger (MSN) and Xbox Live.

IT ALSO FOLLOWS YOU WITH THE CAMERA, AHHHHHHHHHHHH.

This just in, six release titles:

-Kinectimals: It's like adopting and taking care of an animal that responds to virtually everything you say and do, including jump rope. It's pretty cool.

-Kinect Sports: It's what it say it is, with a bunch of pretty cool minigames. Kinda like Wii Sports, but better.

-Kinect Joy Ride: Think kart racing, but you hold your arms out to drive with an invisible wheel.

-Kinect Adventures!: Probably my favorite, it's a bunch of minigames like an obstacle course and white water rafting, along with pictures that get taken at the best moments. Ever.

-Your Shape: Fitness Evolved: It's a working out game and shit made by Ubisoft. Who cares.

-Dance Central: A fucking dance game by Harmonix using Kinect's abilities. Despite how it's another dance part game, it actually looks pretty damn fun. It's full-body dancing, but it's all Pop, Hip Hop, and R&B. Not my pick of music, but it'll probably give someone else some peaked interest. With over 600 moves and 90 routines, you can learn to dance like a professional, so it's a pretty interesting game.

And here's a treat; LucasArts is making a Star Wars game that uses Kinect for hands-free lightsaber goodness. They booted this off with a nice trailer of all gameplay using Kinect to block rounds, use the force, and have a fucking duel with motherfucking Darth Vader. It's due for 2011.

And then two dudes come out to say that Forza Motorsport is gonna use Kinect for a mode of gameplay where you get points for driving past cars exerptly, able to move your hands freely during driving and such. Then you can also walk around a car and closely examine it. Cool, I guess... but I don't care about car specifics. It's supposed to be better than car shows because of this and going inside and stuff. Also coming in 2011.

3. Metal Gear Solid: Rising - N/A

Hideo Kojima then walks out and brings out his new producer. They then show a trailer of Rising, showcasing Raiden up against a huge robotic enemy with a wrist-mounted gatling gun. After cutting him down, they show their new catchphrase for the game; Zan-Datsu.

Then the gameplay comes out. Raiden is seen cutting through anything and everything short of buildings, and then shows a precision, slo-mo aiming system for pinpoint slashes where you control where, how, and at which spot. It's beautiful, gory, and Raiden ends it with showing his ultimate skill. Cutting watermelons.

4. Gears of War 3 - 4/5/2011

After announcing that the rest of the games and demos shown at the conference are 360 exclusive, CliffyB takes the stage with 3 friends. Time for 4-player co-op on Gears.

It starts with a team of Marcus, Sam, Anya, and Cole stranded from a vehicle blowing up. They fight some Locust, where Marcus impales one by charging from 30 feet away with the Pendulum Era Lancer, a new weapon. Soon after, a Lambent stalk pops up and releases a variety of Lambent drones. They mutate, explode, and are made short work of. The group travels and goes around, and runs into a huge enemy.

The Lambent Berserker.

After running, fighting, etc. the group make it to the fort, where the Berserker is thought to be killed by two Hammer of Dawn beams. But it survived, jumped up into the fort, and the gameplay ends. There was some talk about a brand new Beast mode as well, though we have to wait until some floor coverage of it comes up.

5. Fable III - 10/26/2010

Peter Molyneux walks out, talks about British humor, and then shows a nice trailer of Fable III that is mixed with some gameplay and cinematics. The fighting system looks revamped, with some pretty insane executions and such. Nice improvement from Fable II.

6. Codename Kingdoms - N/A

A new partner with Microsoft for a nice exclusive, Crytek pushes the software with a teaser that looks absolutely beautiful. Realistic to the point that I didn't even know it was rendered. Nothing else on it, other than it seems to be from the sword and shield era.

7. Halo: Reach - 9/14/2010

Bungie Creative Director comes out, and shows us some Campaign gameplay after telling us that the Reach Beta is the biggest beta in game history. Nice.

It starts off showing the graphics and such, looking beautiful. The SPARTAN-IIIs land down and travel on the beach, where Covenant Elites drop down from orbit, pretending to be ODST. They're surprisingly agile and tenacious, running at you and dodging bullets just to BEAT you down. Old enemies return, and we get a glimpse of the Grenade Launcher. It's nice.

Some assassinations are showcased, explosions from a Wraith and rocket launcher, and it leads to the SPARTAN-IIIs getting into a rocket and taking off for orbit. After shedding the huge rockets, suddenly gameplay takes over into a Star Fox-esque shooter. Who knows whether it's a open-air dogfight or a rail shooter? I don't.

8. ESPN on 360

Self-explanatory, it's now available for live games and on-demand games, over a multitude of sports with and without friends and your party. Cool. I guess.

9. New Xbox 360 - Later this week

Smaller, black, sleeker, and better looking... they announced a new fucking 360. With a 250 GB hard-drive, Kinect ready availability, and built-in wifi, it looks pretty good. Surprisingly, they're shipping them out to retail stores today, and it'll be available later this week. He then gave free ones to everyone in the audience, free of cost. Lucky bastards.

Good news to those without an Xbox, or who wants to waste money, the new 360 is the same price as the current version. That's a damn good deal.

And that ends the Microsoft Press Conference.

Day One Coverage

1. Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions - 9/7/2010

You've probably heard about the gist of this, and if you haven't, go look it up. It's Spider-Man in four different worlds entirely; where you play as four separate Spider-Mans. It's up to four Spider-Mans to each get their own tablet to restore Order to the universes, and it's got a massive comic feel.

The gameplay looks nice, and the combat is pretty damn good for a Spider-Man game. The first person action happens in boss fights, and it operates as Punch Out! does, with your sticks. Hawt.

And brand new to it, one of the new universes is finally announced. 2099. You know, Bill Reily, or whatever his name is. Spidey is flying in the future, almost like Iron Man, but with base jumping. He can slow down time a bit, and the art styles are different in each world, along with combat and gameplay.

It's nice to hear that each segment is one quarter of the game as well, with none of the universes being jipped. And be glad to hear that there's a lock-on system, because the camera hopefully won't kill you in cold blood. Great to hear!

2. Power Gig: Rise of the SixString - 10/2010

It's like Guitar Hero, except it tries to teach you to play a real guitar by being more realistic than Guitar Hero and Rock Band. Because you have to do real riffs and shit. Not play Simon Says with a toy. Anyway, it's pretty legit.

It has drums as well, which is just as real as it can be, except it doesn't have real drums, but a unit that you swing the stick way over. It's weird, but I guess it works. And should be easier to store around the house and be cheaper. I hope.

It's for the 360 and PS3.

3. Hunted: The Demons Forge - Q1 2011

It's called Gears of Warcraft. That's promising.

There's two main characters, where one is ranged and magic, and the other is a tank with melee attacks and limited magic. At each checkpoint, you can switch characters to fit playstyle for the next area. Even better, the characters are against typecasting; the tank is calm and collected, and the mage is bloodthirsty and fucking nuts.

The graphics are beautiful, and the cover system is a little weird for an action adventure fantasy game. But I personally don't mind. The abilities and spells were designed with co-op in mind, and has drop-in and drop-out co-op that allows each player to use the host's character or their own. It doesn't matter, and just like in Fable II, you can bring your exp you earn back home to your game.

The combat reminds me of Demon's Souls, and it's shown to be a dungeon-crawler. With a friend? That could be really fun.

4. Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings - Q1 2011

Heavily modified from the original Witcher, Witcher 2 is a hardcore RPG with purely amazing graphics. The characters seem very compelling and look pretty original. I couldn't hear the voice acting in the cutscenes over the studio head's voice, but it seemed to be pretty good.

Everything the fans said and wanted is basically what came to fruition. Witcher 2 was changed by the fans, and combat is proof of it. It's no longer time-based, and is very intuitive and paced at a rate where it's accessible by all players to be intense. Think Fable.

There's multiple endings, and the AI partners seem to be good and better than the last game.

5. Apple & Gaming

Just really one thing to say in relation to this: Apple dominated 19% of the handheld gaming market in 2009. That's more than Sony's 11%, but less than Nintendo's 70%. Not good against Nintendo, but going higher than the PSP is big news.

Will this lead to Apple joining in on the console gaming market, just like Microsoft?

6. Homefront - 2/22/2011

This game is basically an FPS that gives gamers the feel of what it would be like to be in the USA if it were invaded and occupied, like we do in war. Civilians turn into Freedom Fighters; and that's who you are in this game. The graphics and gameplay seem solid, and the HUD looks pretty great; especially for the first game in a series like this.

There's a knife, naturally, and a few guns that you might recognize, along with vehicles and such. You chill with your squad throughout the game, and it tells a story of you and your squad as they fight against occupation in America. It's deep, especially for an FPS of it's design.

The army that takes over America is basically a huge South Asian army in 2027, after a huge EMP takes out a majority of America's electrical grid, leading to its occupation. North Korea and South Korea fuse, grab Japan and many other South Asian countries, and then invade America after this huge EMP. The occupation occurs after this fusion, and the game takes place soon after the beginning of it. It's an early on resistance against the occupation, so it'll be interesting to see how the gameplay justifies how easily the civilians adjust to becoming a squad fighting for freedom.

This concludes Day One's floor show coverage, at least for now.

Electronic Arts/Ubisoft Press Conference

Sorry to say, but I decided against covering these two Press Conferences. Sure, they're big and such, but I honestly am too exhausted to try. Plus, it's not Sony or Nintendo.
